The Great Lakes Trek Kashmir

Day 1: Introduction to the Adventure

  • Start Location: Sitkari
  • End Location: Nichnai
  • Activities: After exchanging greetings and getting acquainted with your guide and fellow trekkers, we set off from Sitkari and head towards Nichnai. The trail ascends through Shekdur meadows, passing through a birch forest. The journey is accompanied by a refreshing chai stop at Table Top and a dramatic nallah (water stream) that keeps us company until Nichnai. Enjoy the beautiful light after the rain, with snowy mountains in the backdrop.
  • Highlights: Birch forest, Kashmiri chai, nallah, meadows, sheep and goat herds, and stunning mountain views.

Day 2: Aligning Earth’s Heartbeat at Vishnusar Lake

  • Start Location: Nichnai
  • End Location: Vishnusar Lake
  • Activities: Begin your day with an early morning hike to Vishnusar Lake. Experience the chilly weather as you ascend to Nichnai Pass at 4100m. The trail is dotted with colorful wildflowers and glacial streams. The day culminates at Vishnusar Lake, where the serene blue waters and a solitary shepherd with his sheep create a picture-perfect moment.
  • Highlights: Nichnai Pass, wildflowers, glacial streams, Vishnusar Lake, Kashmiri hospitality, evening folk songs and dance.

Day 3: A Trekker’s Paradise at Gadsar Lake

  • Start Location: Vishnusar Lake
  • End Location: Gadsar Lake
  • Activities: Today’s trek takes you through the lush valleys and steep climbs of Gadsar Pass (4150m). The views from the pass are breathtaking, with two glacial lakes, Kishansar and Vishansar, visible below. Cross Gadsar Lake and continue to a campsite near the Indian Army’s Gadsar Post.
  • Highlights: Gadsar Pass, glacial lakes, wildflower meadows, star-gazing, encounters with local shepherds.

Day 4: Seven Lakes of Satsar

  • Start Location: Gadsar Lake
  • End Location: Satsar
  • Activities: A foggy morning welcomes you as you pass by small lakes and meadows towards Satsar, meaning ‘seven lakes’. Enjoy a leisurely day with opportunities to explore and photograph these tranquil, secluded lakes. The terrain ranges from rocky paths to lush strawberry fields.
  • Highlights: Satsar Lakes, rocky terrain, strawberry fields, local wildlife.

Day 5: The Majestic Mt. Harmukh and Nandkhol Lake

  • Start Location: Satsar
  • End Location: Nandkhol Lake
  • Activities: Today’s trek takes you to the base of the revered Mt. Harmukh, with its pristine Nandkhol Lake. Enjoy the serene views and interactions with local Kashmiris who camp along the shores. As the day ends, play local sports and soak in the peaceful surroundings.
  • Highlights: Mt. Harmukh, Nandkhol Lake, trout fishing, local Kashmiri culture, peaceful camping.

Day 6: The Final Lake – Gangbal Lake

  • Start Location: Nandkhol Lake
  • End Location: Gangbal Lake
  • Activities: Your final destination is the mesmerizing Gangbal Lake. The turquoise waters and the backdrop of snow-capped peaks are truly breathtaking. Spend the day reflecting on the week’s experiences and enjoying the camaraderie of your fellow trekkers.
  • Highlights: Gangbal Lake, snow-capped peaks, peaceful reflections, local Kashmiri food and music.

Day 7: Departure Day

  • Activities: After breakfast, we begin our journey back to civilization, reflecting on the memories made and the incredible landscapes explored. Transport will be provided from Gangbal back to Srinagar.

Things to Do List:

  • Trek through lush valleys, meadows, and snow-capped peaks.
  • Enjoy the peaceful surroundings and interact with local shepherds.
  • Participate in Kashmiri cultural activities including songs and dances.
  • Capture stunning photographs of serene lakes and mountains.

What to Carry:

  • Warm clothing: Layers, waterproof jacket, gloves, hat, and scarf.
  • Footwear: Sturdy trekking shoes or boots with good ankle support.
  • Backpack: Suitable for carrying essentials such as water, snacks, extra layers, camera, and trekking poles.
  • Personal items: Sunscreen, insect repellent, lip balm, personal medications, and toiletries.

  • The Great Lakes Trek is best undertaken from late June to early September when the weather is most favorable for trekking. During this time, the valleys are lush with wildflowers, and the weather is generally clear.
